i just finished this book - hidden by cathy glass. previously, i read another book from her, titled damaged.
basically, cathy is a foster carer who has taken care of many children with troubled pasts. most of them had problems with their families. for example, 'damaged' talks about a girl named jodie who was sexually abused by a pedophile ring, causing her to have horrible behaviour (she soiled herself and wiped it on her face/ kicked cathy's children when she first saw them/ etc).
'hidden' tells a story of a ten year old boy named tayo. his mother, minty, snatched him away from his father when she lost custody of him. ever since then, they have been staying at different houses, living in squats, and tayo was forced to work in a sweatshop. in the end, the book revealed that tayo's father, mr ondura, had been searching for tayo for the past five years and eventually they got reunited. he took so long because minty and tayo smuggled into the uk, and hence there were no records of their names anywhere - which explains why the book is titled 'hidden'
to be honest, i prefer 'damaged' because it shows the build-up of jodie placing her trust in cathy, and slowly revealing (bit by bit) about jodie's past. but 'hidden' was the only book i've read that has made me cry. not because of tayo's sad past, but because i was so moved at mr ondura's love for his son.
i'm halfway through this book - the five people you meet in heaven.
it talks about eddie passing away and moving onto the afterlife. i like mitch albom's idea of heaven. it's not somewhere with a beautiful waterfall/ insanely gorgeous scenery, heaven is somewhere you learn about your life in earth. i'm up until the third person that eddie meets, where ruby explains eddie's dad's death to him. i think this book is really meaningful.
